You’re a Storyline Pro Now — What’s Next?

You’ve completed the essentials of Articulate Storyline 360. Here are my best tips and tricks for leveling-up your course design. Remember, its a process, keep evolving your skills, and keep mastering new features and abilities in Storyline.

Join the Storyline Community

  • Explore E-Learning Heroes; I’ve recommend it before, and I can’t stress enough how helpful being a part of this community can be for developers of all skill-levels

  • Find free downloads, challenges, and inspiration; Google is your friend here. There are tons of free resources out there. The Articulate community is very generous sharing their time and talents.

  • Ask questions and share your work; start your own blog, share your work on social media, or participate in e-learning challenges and share your files with other developers.

Keep Practicing

  • Rebuild an old course; Now that you have some experience, revisit your first course or slide and apply your new skills to make it even better. I have a test file I revist periodically to try out new skils.

  • Experiment with variables; Variables are a fantastic way to level-up your course development game. There are many, many great examples on-line as well as tutorials that cover the basics.

  • Try weekly Articulate Challenges; This is such a great way to build skills (and a portfolio too!); People of all skill-levels and experience participate, so don’t feel like you have to be an expert to join in.

Consider Advanced Topics

Ready to go deeper?

  • Gamification; This has been a hot topic for many years now; understanding the elements of gamificiation can be a valuable too in your arsenal especially in terms of building student engagement.

  • Mobile-first design; understanding how folks interact with mobile devices, and how course design translates to a phone or tablet is really a necessity.

  • Accessibility best practices; All courses should be accessible, and Storyline does a great job of providing you the tools you need. There are also many tools online you can use to augment course accessibility.

  • Custom Javascript inside Storyline; You don’t have to become a javascript pro. Start small by learning some basics, and then grab pre-written code snippets online to use in your course.

Stay Current

Storyline evolves fast:

  • Follow Articulate updates

  • Keep learning new techniques! Challenge yourself to explore, learn, and grow as a developer.

  • Network with other designers; Out side of Elearning Heroes, LinkedIn is a great place to meet and follow course developers and instructional designers. And of course, most social media platforms has an e-learning community.
